Slugging Skincare: What It Is and How to “Slug” Your Skin
Slugging… I’m sure you’ve seen this going viral lately online, especially on TikTok. This skincare craze has grown tremendously in popularity over the last few months, and I’m glad to see people spreading the word because slugging is a GREAT way to moisturize your skin.
Now, I’ve been slugging since before it was cool so I know a thing or two about it! If you aren’t familiar with this skincare trend, you’re probably confused so let’s break down what slugging actually means.
What the heck does slugging mean?
In simple terms, slugging is applying a thick balm or oil as the last step in your evening skincare routine. This helps moisturize your skin but it also helps lock in the other products you have applied prior. The texture of the balm or oil is compared to the mucus of a slug (sounds gross but I promise it works like magic!) therefore getting the trend’s name, slugging.
What are the benefits of slugging?
The primary benefit of slugging is preventing/minimizing trans-epidermal water loss. When you seal your skin with an ointment, you’re locking in moisture which keeps your skin hydrated. Having hydrated skin alone leads to other benefits like a more youthful glow. It’s also been said that slugging significantly helps people with sensitive skin. Basically, if you want overall moisturized, healthy, youthful, and glowing skin… slugging is for you!
Now you’ve got the basics down, how should you add slugging to your skincare routine?
Lucky for you, I’ve got a step-by-step regime you can follow! Glow tip: You can do this during the day but it’s more commonly done at night - and I recommend doing this before bed because it allows time for the products to work their magic as you sleep!
Step #1: Cleanse.
First things first, always wash your face! Use your favorite cleansing product, I personally love the Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser from COSMEDIX. Don’t forget to use your Double Cleanse Headbands!
Step #2: Put on a serum.
We’re all about treating the skin. A serum is the perfect way to do that. I recommend trying the Clarity Serum from COSMEDIX if your concern is blackheads or breakouts. Cell ID Nutritive Defense is also a great product for anti-aging, or Simply Brilliant for brightening up the skin!
Step #3: Moisturize!
Time to amp it up! This step is going to help maximize hydration, don’t forget about the eyes and lips here too. My go-to moisturizer right now is Resync from COSMEDIX.
Step #4: Lather on the balm or oil of your choice!
This should be the very last step in your routine to seal in your skin and lock in all the benefits from the products you’ve applied prior. You can opt for an oil here or a balm. I love the Rescue balm from COSMEDIX, I’ve used this for YEARS as my last step.
